KUCHING, July 19: Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) is collaborating with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) on a crucial conservation project aimed at protecting the critically endangered Sarawak Red Langur.

This primate, one of the rarest, is found only in Maludam National Park.

In a press statement today, YSD emphasized that the project is essential for the survival and recovery of the Sarawak Red Langur.

The action plan includes strategies to promote regional eco-tourism, thereby supporting conservation efforts and boosting local economies.

“The project aims to engage 200 local community members and educate 200 students in the areas surrounding the national park, fostering a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and enhancing eco-tourism opportunities.

“These efforts are expected to contribute to the economic upliftment of at least 8,000 individuals from the B40 group,” it said.

According to SFC general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran, the Sarawak Red Langur, recognised by the International Primatology Society as one of the 25 most endangered primates on the planet, has recently shown promising signs of a potential population outside of its known habitat in Maludam.

“A recent sighting in Jemoreng, a significant discovery, emphasises the critical nature of joint conservation efforts.

“We hope to continue our work with YSD on the conservation of the Sarawak Red Langur and ascertain if a viable population of this species exists in this new area that requires protection,” he added. — DayakDaily
