KUCHING, April 3: Yayasan Sarawak has waived between RM7 million and RM8 million in student loans last year, providing financial relief to students who excelled academically, submitted appeals, or were affected by unforeseen circumstances such as death.
Chief Political Secretary to Sarawak Premier, Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, highlighted this significant financial aid while expressing his strong support for Sarawak’s free tertiary education initiative, set to be implemented in 2026.
“This demonstrates how much Sarawak, through Yayasan Sarawak, has supported students in their higher education pursuits,” he told reporters when met after receiving a visit from Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Dewan Hikmah, Petra Jaya today.
Fazzrudin believes that the free tertiary education initiative will be well-received by Sarawakians and urged the public to appreciate Abang Johari’s leadership in making it a reality.
“Who would have thought that Sarawak could implement free education for its people? This is a major step forward, and we must fully support it,” he stated.
While the initiative will not cover all courses initially, he emphasised that it marks an important first step in strengthening Sarawak’s education sector. – DayakDaily
