MIRI, Jan 28: A landslide at the entrance and exit of Jalan Woodhouse, Tanjong Lobang, disrupted the area early this morning following relentless rainfall since last night (Jan 27).

The affected road is located near the residence of Sarawak’s Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

The incident, reported at approximately 9am, was brought to the minister’s attention by concerned neighbours.

Acting swiftly, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin contacted the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) to initiate emergency measures.

Under their coordination, the Miri City Council (MCC) and the Public Works Department (JKR) mobilised repair teams to conduct temporary restoration works, allowing residents limited access through the affected route.

The transport minister also reached out to the Local Authority to convene an emergency meeting with the Miri Disaster Management Committee (MDMC).

This meeting led to the deployment of personnel to patrol low-lying areas, ensuring vigilance as the adverse weather continues.

Expressing concern for residents, Lee described the current downpour as ‘the worst rainy season in ten years’, with rainfall levels significantly higher than usual.

He urged residents to prioritise safety and immediately report emergencies to the police or Bomba.

Lee also highlighted the risks faced by those in mountainous areas, warning that the prolonged rain has loosened soil, increasing the likelihood of further landslides.

“Residents must remain vigilant to safeguard themselves and their families,” he said, emphasising the importance of prompt communication with authorities to mitigate risks.

The MDMC has since implemented response measures, including the establishment of an emergency mobilisation centre.

This centre will oversee efforts to address flooding, landslides, and other disasters while coordinating rescue operations where necessary. — DayakDaily
