PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14: The Ministry of Works (KKR) is seeking a higher allocation under Budget 2027 to meet growing demands for infrastructure projects, despite the government’s efforts to optimise spending amid economic challenges.
According to its minister, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the ministry understood the current economic constraints but maintained that additional funding was necessary to meet next year’s requirements.
“For KKR, we hope to request a higher allocation than in 2026 because there is indeed a need,” he said at a press conference after attending the KKR Industry and Budget 2027 Dialogue Session here on Thursday (Aug 13).
Regarding the possibility of a reduced allocation, Nanta said the ministry would focus on improving efficiency and work processes to ensure the best possible outcomes despite limited financial resources.
“We need to improve our processes by identifying opportunities to work faster and more efficiently.
“Even if the allocation may not be sufficient, with greater efficiency, we can still deliver the best results,” said Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, in a TVS report.
Commenting on the dialogue session, Nanta said it was to gather views from construction industry players ahead of the preparation of Budget 2027, which is expected to be tabled in October.
Among the key concerns raised by industry representatives were rising construction material and other costs, as well as issues involving labour and taxes.
The ministry also identified six key areas for attention, including strengthening the road network and high-impact projects, sustainable development, digitalisation of the construction industry, empowering local G1 to G4 contractors, and improving road safety through MYJalan. — DayakDaily
