KUCHING, Aug 14: A new indie alternative band bringing together musicians from Kuching and Pontianak has made its debut with ‘Merugilah’, the first single from its upcoming six-track album.
COUPPON comprises Razali ‘Jalee’ Sa’at, Izzuddin ‘Zzy’ Mohd Razali, Aziman ‘Jiman’ Fikriullah Redha Khalik, Ahmad ‘Ajir’ Muhajir and Galih Bismara.
Formed through a shared passion for songwriting and independent music, the five-piece band is built around a simple belief that meaningful songs come from honesty, patience and genuine collaboration.
‘Merugilah’ marks the first chapter of the band’s musical journey, exploring the regret that follows when pride prevents someone from recognising another person’s sincerity.
The song tells the story of pushing away someone who loves wholeheartedly, only to realise that the greatest loss may be one created by oneself.
Musically, ‘Merugilah’ blends intimate lyricism with atmospheric indie alternative arrangements, allowing silence, space and emotion to carry the story alongside the lyrics.
But the single is only the beginning for COUPPON.
The band’s forthcoming six-track debut album is being developed as a collection of interconnected stories, with each song drawing from the personal experiences, reflections and emotional landscape of a different member.
Together, the songs will explore themes of love, regret, identity, hope and the quieter moments that shape who people become.
Rather than rushing to complete the album, COUPPON is allowing each song to develop naturally, with the band believing that every chapter deserves its own time and space before becoming part of the finished record.
The band said collaboration is more than just part of its creative process, but the foundation of COUPPON itself, with each member bringing a distinct voice while working together through trust, conversation and a shared commitment to honest songwriting.
For ‘Merugilah’, Jalee is credited as the songwriter, while the lyrics are by written by him and Ajir.
The music, production and arrangement were handled by COUPPON, with the song recorded at Roemah Ajir. Ahmad Muhajir also handled the engineering, mixing and mastering, while Endruw created the artwork and Izzy Izzudin handled photography and creative direction.
‘Merugilah’ is now available on YouTube, with releases on digital streaming platforms to follow upon distribution approval.
