KUCHING, Sept 6: A jobless woman has been sentenced to two weeks in jail and a RM2,000 fine by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to stealing 25 chocolate bars from a supermarket last Sunday (Sept 3).
Noraini Norzan, 25, was charged with stealing 25 bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk with a total value of RM210 from a supermarket at Jalan Sultan Tengah, at about 5.40pm on Sept 3.
She was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment of up to ten years in prison and a fine if found guilty.
Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi ordered the accused to serve an additional week in jail if she fails to pay the fine.
According to the brief facts of the case, a supermarket employee and a security guard apprehended the accused when a security alarm was triggered as the accused passed through an area.
The complainant then directed the accused to re-enter the supermarket for further inspection.
Upon examination, it was found that the accused’s bag contained 25 Cadbury chocolate bars, and a police report was filed for further action.
Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was not represented by legal counsel. — DayakDaily
