Woman among six foreign workers detained over illegal cigarettes, alcohol in Miri

MIRI, Jan 17: Six foreigners including a woman may be blacklisted and deported back to their home country, for allegedly possessing illicit cigarettes and untaxed beer in Miri.

Miri OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the arrests were made on January 15.


“The raid was a joint effort by Bukit Aman Wildlife Crime Bureau and Region 5 Marine Police on a premises in Miri around 3pm,” he said today.

Alexson added, during the operation, a local man was also detained, bringing the total number of suspects arrested to seven.

However, Alexson did not divulge further details on the size of the seizure.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for smuggling untaxed goods, which carries a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000.

The six foreign workers are also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. — DayakDaily
