Over RM260,000 worth of untaxed cigarettes seized in Miri

MIRI, Sept 7: The Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 seized several cartons of cigarettes believed to be untaxed and without Royal Malaysian Customs Department tax stamps during an inspection in Bandar Baru Permyjaya here on Friday (Sept 4).

In a TVS news report, Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 Commander ACP Abdul Rahman Mat Hasan said a team of officers and personnel from the Miri Tactical Headquarters stopped and inspected a car driven by a local man at a parking area at about 10am.

“Checks found several cartons of cigarettes believed to be without tax and Royal Malaysian Customs Department tax stamps. The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM265,566,” he said.

He said the suspect and seized items were subsequently handed over to the investigating officer of the Miri District Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division for further action and investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967. — DayakDaily
