SIBU, June 20: A waterfront for Durin could become a new tourist attraction.
“The old jetty under the Public Works Department (JKR) is no longer in use because the river bank is becoming an island and the water is getting shallower, making it difficult for boats to dock,” said Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep yesterday.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the jetty, Henry believed that if the area around the jetty is converted to a waterfront or riverbank, this could become a new tourist attraction in Durin.
He added that the government is likely to approve the application for the waterfront project.
“Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing has applied for a waterfront to be built on the river near Durin Bazar.
“There are already waterfronts in Limbang, Kanowit, Song and Selangau. So I believe the application may be in the process.
“So, let’s pray and I believe YAB Premier will indeed evaluate, see and spread the development in rural areas including Durin,” he added.
Meanwhile,Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Central Region deputy chairman, Councilor Teo Boon Siew said that the annual Durin Festival takes place at the Durin Bazaar riverine area.
However, the festival could not accommodate a large number of visitors due to limited space. There is also no covered area.
“With the upgrading of the old jetty, it would not only attract and accommodate more visitors during the Durin Festival but also provide a new recreational space for the local community,” he explained. — DayakDaily
