Warning issued for heavy rain, rough seas in Sarawak

KUCHING, Dec 30: The Malaysia Meteorological Department has issued a warning concerning heavy rain and first category rough seas for the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia as well as Sarawak.

The areas affected by heavy rain in Sarawak are Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Rejang and Mukah.

Issued at 10.25 am today, the department said there would be thunderstorms and heavy rain over Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Sarawak.


The department also issued a first category warning for strong winds and rough seas.

Thunderstorms over the waters off Sarawak especially in the areas of Kuching, Rejang and Mukah were expected to continue early afternoon today.

This condition may cause strong winds up to 50 kmph and rough seas with wave height up to 3.5 metres and dangerous to small boats.

The department said said that strong northeasterly winds of 40-50 kmph with waves up to 3.5 metres are expected to occur over the waters off Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor until Wed, Jan 3, 2018.

This condition of strong winds and rough seas is dangerous to small crafts, and for recreational sea activities and sea sports.

In addition, the coastal areas of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and East Johor are vulnerable to sea level rise which are expected to occur from Saturday, Dec 30 until Wed, Jan 3, 2018. — DayakDaily
