KUCHING, Oct 4: The anti-party hopping law will take effect tomorrow (Oct 5), says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said this following the King’s consent on the Constitutional (Amendment) Act (No 3) 2022 on Provisions Preventing Members of Parliament from Switching Parties on Aug 31 and its gazettement as Act A1663 on Sept 6.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has also approved the effective date of the Constitution (Amendment) Act (No. 3) 2022 on Oct 5, 2022 in accordance with Section 1(2) and Section 1(3) of Act A1663,” he said in a statement today.

Previously, the anti-party hopping bill was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 28 with 209 MPs voting for the motion and later, in the Dewan Negara on Aug 9 with 52 senators voted in favour.

Wan Junaidi further said that with the Act coming into effect on Oct 5, the amendment for Section 7A of the Eighth Schedule, Clause 6 of Article 48, Article 160 and new Clause 3A of Article 10 as well as new Article 49A, can be enforced immediately.

“This further allows the application of Act A1663 at the State level, subject to the approval of the Sultan/Tuan Yang Terutama/King of the State concerned,” he added. — DayakDaily
