KUCHING, July 29: The opening of voco Kuching by IHG comes at an opportune time as Sarawak intensifies its tourism ambitions, with major infrastructure and connectivity projects in the pipeline, said political pundit Dato Peter Minos.
In a statement, Minos congratulated Bobby Ting on transforming the former Four Points hotel into voco Kuching, describing it as one of the city’s finest hotels and a reflection of Sarawak’s growing tourism potential.
“Good hotels are absolutely needed for a successful tourism sector. They are just as important as connectivity, tourist attractions and food,” he said, echoing Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s remarks at the hotel’s grand opening yesterday (July 28).
He highlighted Sarawak’s ongoing infrastructure developments, including the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, the construction of coastal roads and bridges, and the Pan Borneo Highway, which he said would enhance connectivity throughout the State.
“With the proposed Tanjung Embang Airport expected to further boost tourism by 2030, hotels would be among the key beneficiaries of the anticipated increase in visitor arrivals,” he said.
He added that the establishment of Sarawak’s own airline, AirBorneo, has generated excitement among Sarawakians and would further strengthen connectivity in the years ahead.
“Ttravellers typically prioritise hotels that are affordable, safe, clean and strategically located.
“Voco Kuching meets many of these criteria, particularly with its location offering convenient access to eateries, retail outlets and public transport, including a nearby ART station,” he said.
Minos also believes the hotel will appeal to international travellers who are already familiar with the voco brand in their respective countries. — DayakDaily
