Veteran basketball player tragically collapses, dies in Miri ahead of tournament

The man was rushed to the hospital but medical personnel were unable to resuscitate him.

MIRI, Sept 7: A veteran basketball player in his 50s from the Federal Territory of Labuan was found unconscious in front of a café at Pelita Commercial Center on Friday afternoon (Sept 6).

The man, who had come to Miri to participate in the 33rd Veteran ASEAN Basketball Tournament scheduled from Sept 5 to 9, collapsed after having lunch with a friend at a nearby restaurant, around 12pm.

His friend immediately attempted to perform CPR but was unable to revive him.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the incident, stating that the case is currently being investigated as a sudden death.

“We are still conducting our investigations to determine the cause of death,” he said.

He also urged the public to refrain from speculating or spreading unverified information about the incident on social media, as it could stir unnecessary concern within the community.

The tournament, a gathering of regional veteran basketball players, has seen athletes from seven ASEAN nations converge in Miri to compete in friendly matches and foster camaraderie. — DayakDaily
