KUCHING, Oct 7: Sarawak is a leader in renewable energy production and environmental conservation in Malaysia, says United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia, Brian McFeeters.
Lauding the Sarawak government’s efforts in combating climate change and the energy crisis, McFeeters reiterated that the US government remains steadfast in its support to the State.
Sharing some of the topics raised and discussed during his courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday, McFeeters added that the US will assist Sarawak on technology and talent.
“It was an excellent meeting with Abang Johari where he talked about the need for technology and talent in Sarawak which the US can and has been helping to provide. He also mentioned having more US companies in Sarawak to develop further in petrochemicals particularly its downstream and the potential it contains.
“Abang Johari also shared his interest in renewable energy and concerns about the environment. Sarawak has an ambitious goal to provide affordable, reliable, and renewable energy to the region.
“Our US companies can support Sarawak in its energy transition through expertise in green technology and infrastructure development,” McFeeters said during a press roundtable event at the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre today.
Calling Sarawak’s youth a vibrant population, he added that the US Embassy is committed to invest in Sarawak’s future leaders and strengthening their collaboration on energy and environmental conservation so they can combat climate crisis together.
Meanwhile, McFeeters reiterated the US government’s focus on energy security in his earlier meeting with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
He explored the potential of utilising US financing or technical expertise to support SEB in its projects on solar energy and green hydrogen.
The ambassador also visited Sarawak Forestry Corporation.
On Sarawak’s collective efforts to enhance forest conservation and preserve its unique biodiversity, McFeeters reinforced the US. government’s interest in providing technical assistance and expertise in forestry and climate change.
“The US is eager to bolster scientific, business, and academic linkages with Malaysia, including Sarawak’s institutions to combat this issue,” he added. — DayakDaily
