KUCHING, Dec 11: The Kuching Water Board (KWB) and all relevant stakeholders have been urged to take immediate action to restore and ensure stable water supply to areas affected by interruptions due to ongoing works for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS).

Michael Kong, special assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, raised this, noting that residents across many parts of Kuching have been enduring water supply interruptions since Dec 4.

“Regrettably, the situation remains unresolved, and more scheduled interruptions are expected today and again on Friday (Dec 13).

“This prolonged issue has caused significant inconvenience to the public and raised serious concerns about the efficiency and competency of the authorities,” he said in a statement today.

While acknowledging the need for infrastructure works in the city’s development, Kong called on the authorities to prioritise a swift resolution to the issue.

Kong emphasised that any works must be planned and executed in a way that minimises disruptions to essential services.

“Water is a basic necessity, and any disruption to its supply directly impacts the daily lives of the people,” he said.

Furthermore, Kong urged KWB to treat this as a wake-up call to improve preparedness and coordination in managing such situations in the future.

“The people of Kuching deserve better. Prolonged disruptions such as this are unacceptable and should not become the norm. As a public service provider, KWB has a duty to ensure efficient delivery of essential services and to take every measure to mitigate the impact of such interruptions on the community,” he said. — DayakDaily
