KUCHING, July 21: The upcoming Sarawak Science Centre (SSC) will provide space for travelling exhibitions, says Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
He said upon completion, the SSC will collaborate with science centres across the globe to materialise the idea.
“That is why we do not construct the science centre to be ‘fixed’.
“We want to have areas where they can show travelling exhibitions, so we have met with London Science Museum and our consultant Singapore Science Centre that have met all these demands,” he told reporters after the First Pile Ceremony of SSC at the project’s site in Jalan Stadium here today.
He also said a hostel would be built near the centre to cater to visiting researchers and students.
The SSC at Jalan Stadium, Petra Jaya here, is expected to complete by early 2025.
The RM239 million project, constructed on 10.97 acres of land, commenced its groundbreaking ceremony on Oct 1, 2020.
The SSC is a subsidiary of the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC), a statutory body of the Sarawak government under the purview of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD).
The proposed centre is 10-storey high and has four floors of exhibit space housing exhibits designed around themes of the earth, biodiversity, environment, genomics, life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, ICT, and many more that aim to stimulate interest in the sciences and technologies.
Also present were Deputy Minister of MEITD Datuk Francis Harden Hollis; permanent secretary of MEITD Azmi Bujang; Sarawak Research Development Council (SRDC) general manager-cum-SSC chief executive officer Dr Peter Morin Nissom; Borneo Development Corporation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (BDC) chairman Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie; and BDC chief executive officer Nor-E-Fadzwie Salleh. — DayakDaily
