KUCHING, May 9: Julau independent candidate Larry Sng has defeated Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) candidate Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum.
As of time of writing, the actual majority has yet to be confirmed.
The results came as a surprise but the situation appeared quite certain at 5.30pm where Larry was leading and there were only two ballot boxes left to be counted.
On his win, Larry thanked the people for supporting him and revealed to DayakDaily that he had been on the ground since five months ago and so, the win did not come as a surprise.
“We have been working hard on the ground for quite some time except that we did not publicise it,” said Larry.
He said the main reason for his win was that the people have lost confidence in the BN candidate and wanted a change.
“The result shows that the people are with us. They want change. They have lost confidence in the BN candidate,” said Larry.
Larry said he decided to contest in Julau which his father contested in and won before, and not in Lubok Antu which Larry contested in the 2013 general election or Selangau which his father Datuk Sng Chee Hua contested in the same year.
The senior Sng was Julau MP between 1995 to 1999. — DayakDaily
