JULAU, Nov 2: A new water treatment plant with a capacity of 30 million litres per day (MLD) has been proposed under the Julau Water Supply Project Package 2 to increase treated water production and meet the growing needs of the district’s expanding population.

Caretaker Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the project is currently at the planning stage as part of the State government’s continued efforts to strengthen water supply infrastructure in Julau.

He said the proposed plant would serve as a long-term measure to ensure treated water production capacity keeps pace with population growth and future development in the area.

He added that the Sarawak government is also taking steps to address water supply disruptions in areas along Jalan KJD, including Assan Nunggang, through a proposed upgrade of the existing pipeline system.

“We are also taking steps to address water supply disruptions affecting areas along Jalan KJD, including Assan Nunggang, through plans to upgrade the existing pipeline system.

“This is being carried out through the 600-millimetre-diameter Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pipeline upgrading project from the Bintangor Junction to the KJD Booster Station, which is currently under construction,” he said at the opening ceremony of the Julau Water Treatment Plant here today, according to TVS.

The project is scheduled for completion in December 2026 and is expected to improve the capacity of the water distribution system, thereby reducing longstanding supply problems affecting residents in the areas concerned.

Julaihi said the phased implementation of water supply infrastructure projects reflected the state government’s efforts to expand access to treated water while improving the quality and efficiency of distribution networks throughout Sarawak.

He added that the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) would continue monitoring all ongoing projects to ensure they are implemented according to schedule and meet their intended targets. — DayakDaily
