KUCHING, March 30: Sarawak Governor (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has urged Sarawakians to embrace the spirit of unity and moderation, while appreciating the State government’s efforts to enhance the people’s well-being.
In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri address, the Governor commended the Sarawak government, led by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, for introducing key socio-economic initiatives such as the Sarawak Civil Service Special Allowance, which provides state civil servants with a monthly incentive of RM400 to RM700 beginning January 2025.
He also highlighted the RM450 million allocation under the Sarawak Basic Necessities Contribution (SKAS) programme, which has so far benefited more than 886,288 recipients, particularly in preparation for Hari Raya.
“As a result of the implemented initiatives, I was informed that a total of 13,798 heads of households have successfully moved out of the hardcore poor category.
“Through comprehensive assessments and a more productive integrated approach—including targeted assistance, job matching, skills training, and other initiatives—the socio-economic situation in Sarawak is expected to continue improving in line with the State’s income growth and current economic developments.
“I am confident these measures will continue to support the State’s socio-economic development and ensure the people of Sarawak live in greater prosperity and well-being,” he said.
Wan Junaidi further celebrated the completion of the RM16 billion Pan Borneo Highway spanning 786 kilometres, which is expected to ease travel during the festive season and spur rural economic opportunities.
He noted that rural infrastructure development has shown strong progress, with clean water supply coverage now at 85 per cent and rural electricity access reaching 98.6 per cent, with targets to achieve 100 per cent water access by 2030.
Touching on the cultural significance of Hari Raya in Sarawak, he praised the tradition of open houses and mutual visits among the State’s diverse communities, calling it a reflection of Sarawak’s harmony.
“This practice not only strengthens family and friendship ties but also nurtures the spirit of tolerance and affection among races.
“I urge that the tradition of visiting one another in our community continues to be preserved as a heritage that unites us all. Let us take this opportunity to forgive one another, strengthen brotherhood, and foster the spirit of unity in our State.”
As Sarawakians prepare to celebrate, Wan Junaidi reminded everyone to prioritise safety during their journeys and expressed appreciation to frontline personnel, including security forces and healthcare workers, who continue to serve during the festivities.
“May this Aidilfitri bring joy, strengthen our bonds, and further solidify our unity as a harmonious state,” he said, concluding his message with warm wishes of “Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir dan Batin.” — DayakDaily
