Unifor presents RM1.5 mln fund to St Nicholas Church in Samariang

KUCHING, July 9: The Sarawak government through Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) has presented a fund of RM1.5 million to St Nicholas Church in Samariang.

The cheque was presented by Santubong MP Dato Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar to Reverend Jugah Adi, who is the Priest-in-Charge, during a simple ceremony held at St Nicholas Church today.

Speaking during the ceremony, Wan Junaidi said the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is a government that cares for all religions.

ā€œSarawak is the only state in Malaysia that provide such a fund specifically to assist other religions and can become an example for other states in fostering unity among the people,ā€ he said.

Wan Junaidi hopes that the fund will help the church to build a retention wall to prevent land erosion caused by the river nearby, and also to construct a priest quarters.

Earlier on, Jugah said apart building retention wall and priest quarters, the fund will also be use to repair parts of the church that have almost collapsed due to erosion.
