KUCHING, Jan 16: Sarawak could have its first underwater hotel, complemented with a water theme park and extreme sports activities, at the abandoned Ang Cheng Ho quarry lake in Batu Kawah once its makeover is complete.
While the project’s first phase is being constructed, Deputy Chief Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian said there would be initial discussions with potential private investors and stakeholders about the entertainment facilities.
Phase 1 of the facelift project involves the construction of a multi-purpose hall that could accommodate 1,000 people, a basketball court, and a 3,000-square-foot creative hub for young entrepreneurs, accompanied by a lakeside car park.
Currently, Dr Sim said related works, including the laying of a six-storey foundation structure, is being carried out at the bottom of the 20-acre natural lake, which will be one of the selling points of the attraction.
To make way for construction activities in the lake, he added that contractors would have to spend 24 hours for six months straight to drain water from the lake.
“I’m very excited with this unique iconic project (first of its kind in Sarawak). Despite everyone, from consultants to contractors, underestimating the huge challenges of the project, I thank everyone for making good progress,” said Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, in a social media post yesterday.
The beautification and revamping project of the abandoned quarry, which first cost RM9.8 million, was proposed by Dr Sim and approved by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
On Jan 5, 2021, Abang Johari announced an additional RM5 million to the project for development purposes during the groundbreaking ceremony. — DayakDaily
