KUCHING, Jan 16: The failed drainage systems and continuous rainfall have caused floods in several areas of Dudong.

Dudong assemblyman Dato Seri Tiong King Sing said that Jalan Salim-Stabau, Bukit Lima, Durin, and Sentosa are among the flood-prone areas.

“Following this, I have requested the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to go on the ground and solve the matter immediately.

“We cannot let the situation worsen first before we take action,” he said in a statement today.

Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, said the overflow of the Igan and Rajang rivers and other tributaries is also a significant factor in the floods.

“Therefore, it is important for us to deepen the rivers involved so that the flooding problem can be resolved for the betterment of people in Sibu,” he added.

Yesterday, Tiong went to the ground to examine the floods occurring at Lorong Old Oya 22.

He explained that the area was flooded with excess water from Sungai Seduan following continuous rainfall that caused the main road to be flooded up to 2 to 3 feet high.

“This area covers the districts of Dudong, Nangka and Bukit Assek. Therefore, I will liaise with the relevant parties to address this issue, including obtaining appropriate allocations to improve what is necessary, such as raising the main road to 5 feet high.

“I don’t want residents, especially students, to have to wade through the overflowing river every day to get to school,” he emphasised. ― DayakDaily
