UK MP hails Borneo Cultures Museum as ‘world-class’ ASEAN tourism catalyst, aims to woo British travellers

KUCHING, June 16: United Kingdom (UK) Member of Parliament and Trade Envoy Naz Shah has hailed the Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) as a “world-class institution,” pegging it as a premier Sarawak asset capable of driving cultural tourism cooperation within ASEAN following a delegation visit here today.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Naz highlighted Sarawak’s immense potential to anchor itself as an international cultural tourism hub, backed by its rich heritage, diverse communities and pristine natural environment.

“BCM plays an important role in presenting Sarawak’s cultural identity and history to international visitors, while also serving as a platform showcasing the broader cultural heritage of Borneo in a structured and accessible manner,” she said.

Making her maiden visit to the Land of the Hornbills, she noted that the experience has provided a clearer blueprint of Sarawak’s potential in cultural, heritage, and nature-based tourism.

She added that the move unlocks fresh opportunities for the UK and Malaysia to deepen their bilateral cooperation in these lucrative industries.

Naz, who is also committed to sharing her insights at BCM with UK stakeholders to elevate awareness of Sarawak’s unique tourism portfolio and capture the interest of British travellers.

“Putting Sarawak’s distinct attractions on the world stage will inevitably boost international tourism demand and firmly place the state on the map within the competitive ASEAN region,” she emphasised.

The visit underscores the museum’s growing global reputation, elevating BCM from a mere local attraction into a strategic international stage for Sarawak’s cultural heritage.
