BETONG, Feb 28: The collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is a valuable lesson for Sarawakians on the importance of choosing the right leaders.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas emphasised that a government could survive numerous challenges when experienced and good leaders were at the helm.
“When the government has such leaders, it would be unshakable,” he told his Bukit Saban constituency during the GPS roadshow for Kubal Ili at Rh Langan, Nanga Mara, Layar today.
“Let the current national political situation where the federal government has fallen apart due to new inexperienced leaders and the jostling for power and positions be a lesson for all of us.
“We must have strong committed leaders whose struggles are for the state and people,” he reminded.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, he reiterated is a very experienced leader, having been in politics for over 40 years.
“He is competently supported by his team of multi-racial ministers who themselves are not only very experienced but hardworking as well,” he said.
Uggah thus called on all Sarawakians to continue to support Abang Johari’s Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government as this was crucial for Sarawak to aggressively pursue and protect its rights and wealth as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Uggah reminded that political parties including from outside would vouch in every election that their candidates would make good leaders.
“A strong leader alone is not enough. He must be supported by an equally strong and stable coalition or party.
“To me too, there is no need to change your leaders if they can still deliver. People do not chop down a durian tree if it continues to produce good harvest every fruiting seasons,” he said.
Uggah added a great majority of Sarawakians had made the right choice by supporting local political parties in the last election.
“Thus, Sarawak through GPS has remained very strong and united, enabling the state government to pursue its development and finance engineering agendas and programmes very well all for the people own benefits,” he said.
He hopes the people, especially the rural folks, would continue to give GPS their fullest support on the coming state election.
Meanwhile, Betong member of parliament (MP) Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat also said Sarawak did the right thing in forming the GPS.
“Through GPS, it can chart out its own development agenda without having to refer to others, in particular those from outside the state.
“The state has a visionary leader in Abang Johari, who knows how to source for extra fund for its developmental agendas,” he added.
Robert pointed out that the PH government had won the general elections based on many promises but sadly, many of them had not been fulfilled.
He thus advised the people to reject political parties from outside the state as their leaders would not have real knowledge of local grievances and aspirations. —DayakDaily
