KUCHING, July 25: Sarawak’s Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has expressed confidence in the newly appointed President of the Senate, Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, to assist the Federal government in advancing parliamentary reforms.

In a statement today, Wan Junaidi expressed hope that Awang Bemee, who was appointed on July 22, will continue to strengthen the checks and balances mechanisms that he had implemented before his resignation earlier this year.

“I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest congratulations to the newly appointed President of the Senate, Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah.

“I am indeed happy to see that the Prime Minister has chosen a Sarawak leader once again to be nominated and eventually endorsed by Senate members as the 21st President of the Senate of Parliament Malaysia,” he expressed.

According to him, the appointment of Awang Bemee is particularly significant as it coincides with the date Sarawak attained self-government 61 years ago on July 22, 1963, preceding the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963.

He concluded by once again congratulating Awang Bemee on his historic appointment as the 21st President of the Senate. — DayakDaily
