Two men lose RM4,250 after falling for refrigerator scam online

SIBU, Feb 21: Two men in their 30s here lost RM4,250 after they were tricked into paying for non-existent refrigerators.

Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said today that the two victims, a mechanic and a student, had filed police reports yesterday.

“The police received two police reports from the two victims who claimed to have suffered a total loss of RM4,250 after paying for the refrigerators which they came across on Facebook,” he said.

Both men who are unknown to each other were interested in buying three refrigerators. The suspect contacted them through WhatsApp and informed them that they needed to deposit a payment into a given account.

However, after making payment, they could not contact the suspect as their calls were blocked.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Zulkipli advised the public not to be easily deceived by what they see on social media.

“Don’t easily make payments into bank accounts in the name of different individuals from the seller,” he advised. — DayakDaily
