KUCHING, Oct 23: The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak has strongly condemned the theft of cables in the vicinity of the newly completed Sejingkat Bridge, which resulted in damage to components of its electrical system and public infrastructure.

In a statement today, JKR Sarawak said it viewed the incident seriously, warning that such irresponsible acts could disrupt the functioning of the electrical system, compromise road users’ safety and affect the smooth operation of the infrastructure.

The department said cable theft and vandalism not only caused damage to government assets but could also result in financial losses through the cost of repairing and replacing damaged components.

It added that such acts undermined efforts to provide safe and quality infrastructure for the people.

“JKR Sarawak strongly condemns all forms of theft, vandalism and acts of damage to public facilities,” the statement said.

The department urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the authorities, particularly those involving cables, electrical equipment or public facilities around Sejingkat Bridge.

The public was also advised not to approach, touch or handle exposed or damaged cables and electrical equipment, as these could pose safety risks.

JKR Sarawak said it would continue to monitor the safety and condition of infrastructure under its supervision and work with the relevant authorities to ensure appropriate action was taken.

It emphasised that public facilities were shared assets that must be protected for the benefit and well-being of the community.

The department reiterated its call to the public to help protect public infrastructure and put an end to vandalism. — DayakDaily
