Two locals remanded for seven days in drug possession probe

MIRI, March 15: The Customs Department was granted a seven-day remand order against two locals to assist in a drug possession probe, following the seizure of cannabis from the duo on Friday (March 13).

A stash of dry cannabis (Ganja) leaves were found concealed inside two parcels weighing at 520g and 220g respectively, were seized from the duo after they went to a courier service to collect the parcels at Eastwood Valley Industrial Estate at Jalan Miri By Pass, around 4.15pm.

Both accused, a female aged 26 and her male friend, 38, were produced and represented by their counsels at Miri Magistrate’s Court here yesterday, while Inspector Mohd Alamin and Rosli Wahab prosecuted.

According to the fact of the case, the female accused had claimed of being instructed by someone from Keningau, Sabah, to collect the parcels from the courier service. She was accompanied by the male suspect.

Magistrate Eleanor Mako Timothy meted out the remand order. Both accused are to be produced again in the Magistrate’s Court on March 21.

They are charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The indictment carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction. — DayakDaily
