KUCHING, March 15: Borneo Balloon Fiesta 2020 which was scheduled for April 11 and 12 at Dataran Celebrati, Stadium Negeri at Petra Jaya has been postponed until further notice.

The event organiser, Nex Vision Sdn Bhd (Nex Vision), in a press statement asserted the current outbreak of the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Sarawak has made it impossible to predict the scale of the outbreak during the planned dates of the event.

Therefore, it decided to postpone the event.

“Even as we look forward to putting up a spectacular fiesta for the first time in Kuching, the well-being of the community takes precedence during this period of health concern.

“We are, however, eager to bring the event back as soon as we get a favourable update from the State Disaster Management Committee,” Nex Vision’s manager Audrey Neng revealed.

Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Committee had earlier today advised the postponement of events which involved the gathering of more than 50 people.

It explained that the action was taken as part of the state government’s efforts and measures to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

As of noon, 11 new positive cases were reported which raised the total number of cases from last Friday to 20.

Last Friday, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told a press conference that major tourism events such as Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2020, Spartan Race 2020 Sarawak, International Big Bikers, Borneo Balloon Fiesta 2020 and more than 30 business conferences were to be postponed due to the worsening situation involving Covid-19.

He explained that the decision to postpone some major events by his ministry was following the latest advisory from the State Disaster Management Committee. — DayakDaily
