KUCHING, April 21: Two children born in Sarawak who were previously denied the “K” indicator on their MyKad have now been officially recognised as Sarawakians.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong, who personally accompanied the children to the National Registration Department (NRD) last week to submit their applications, confirmed that the “K” code has since been successfully added to their identity cards.

“This update holds great significance for them, as they are now officially Sarawakians,” she said in a press statement today.

She explained that many stateless children who gained Malaysian citizenship under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution had continued to face difficulties due to the lack of the “K” indicator—a code that confirms one’s Sarawakian status.

Without it, they were often denied long-term residency rights, access to education, and employment opportunities within Sarawak.

Yong said she had repeatedly raised the matter in past Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sittings, urging the State government to review and amend policies that excluded these children from being fully recognised as Sarawakians.

“I am pleased that this matter has finally been addressed and solved,” she said.

She also welcomed the move that now allows children adopted by Sarawakians and those granted citizenship under Article 15A to apply for the “K” code, calling it a “significant step forward in recognising their rightful identity as Sarawakians.” — DayakDaily
