Two arrested after setting excavator on fire in Petra Jaya over wage dispute

KUCHING, March 27: Police have arrested two local men, aged 34 and 46, for setting an excavator on fire at a project site in Jalan Tun Dato Abang Haji Mohd Salahuddin, Petra Jaya.

In a statement, Kuching police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said, the incident occurred due to dissatisfaction between the suspects and their employer over unpaid wages, leading them to set fire to the machinery using glass bottles filled with petrol.

The Kuching district police chief confirmed that the incident, which occurred yesterday (March 26), was reported to the authorities.

Acting on the information, a team of police from the D7 branch, Kuching District Police Headquarters, successfully arrested the two suspects. Initial urine screening test results found that both suspects were positive for drugs.

However, Mohd Farhan said the case is not linked to gangsterism.

“The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years, or a fine, or both,” he said.

He also urged the public to come forward with information related to this incident by contacting the Kuching IPD control centre at 082-244444 or directly reaching out to the case investigator, Inspector Ridzainuddin Rosley Abdullah, at 010-9431449.
