KUCHING, Sept 4: Underground cable faults at two locations were identified as the cause of the intermittent power outage experienced in Petra Jaya including Gita, Sri Wangi, Astana housing, parts of Jalan Depo and its surrounding areas on Tuesday evening.
According to Sarawak Energy Bhd, the first interruption was reported at 7.43pm and supply was initially restored at 9.10pm through alternative sources. However, another alternative feeder caused another power trip at 9.44pm.
The technical team managed to isolate and identify the fault before supply was fully restored at 12.03am.
“Investigations showed that both power trips were caused by faulty joints of two underground cables at Jalan Semarak and Jalan Astana, respectively. As at press time, repairs on the damaged cable joints are ongoing,” it said in a statement.
Western regional manager Choo Min Chong informed that Sarawak Energy has identified areas where underground cables were to be replaced and laying of new cable projects planned for the year.
“As part of the annual reinforcement projects, we have scheduled the replacement of cables in these areas, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“Some of the works will also include laying of new cables. Over the implementation of these works, we will ensure extensive preparations are made to minimise interruptions to the customers and take the necessary contingencies,” he said.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our customers on the intermittent outages and will continue to improve our services,” he added.
