SIBU, Sept 17: Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has instructed that the construction of the Road Transport Department office for Sarikei be expedited.

Wee said this during his working visit-cum-meeting at the Sibu RTD office today with the state Road Transport Department (RTD) director Mohd Shafiq Anas Abdullah and Repok assemblyman, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.

According to him, a sum of RM22 million had already been approved for the Sarikei RTD office and there was no reason why construction work should not begin.

“I note that the addition of RTD branches is very necessary, especially the construction of the RTD Sarikei branch which has been approved with an allocation of RM22 million which should be expedited, to facilitate (sic) the people of Sarawak when making matters related to JPJ,” he said.

He reasoned that more RTD offices were needed for the state due to its size and that limited Internet services in rural areas pose challenges to accessing RTD services online.

“I also found that the RTD service at UTC has achieved high revenue collection because it brings effective facilities to the locals in Sarawak,” he said.

The minister also urged people to take this opportunity to pay their summonses immediately so as to take advantage of discounts of up to 70 per cent for the payment of RTD and Land Public Transport Agency compound summonses which will expire on Sept 30.

The meeting also touched on certain development proposals and issues currently being faced by Sarawak RTD, such as revenue collection, addition of new branches and posts, counter services and car units, as well as the welfare of officers. — DayakDaily
