MIRI, Feb 28: All 37 road junctions under Miri City Council (MCC) will be upgraded in phases to intelligent traffic light control systems beginning this year in phases, to provide better and more convenient commutes for road users using smart technology.

This was disclosed by State Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin today after attending a briefing on the city’s smart mobility initiative.

“I have also proposed to the council to set up a special committee for the smart city mobility initiative to pursue this plan,” he said when met after the briefing at the new MCC headquarters.

Also present was Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

Lee viewed the smart city mobility initiative as a crucial component for urban traffic management, revealing a team consisting of various relevant agencies will be formed to pursue the plan.

“There will be increased use of technology in urban traffic management Statewide, and Miri is no exception…for that reason we need multiple agencies to work together…and my ministry (Transport Ministry) will coordinate the team,” Lee asserted.

He also proposed for Miri to develop a traffic master plan, as the city is growing fast.

“We need a proper plan to implement traffic management systematically,” he said.

Lee also revealed that his ministry is planning to install Radar Speed Advisory signs at various strategic locations in Miri. — DayakDaily
