KUCHING, August 5: ‘Tokens’ will be given to volunteers for Malaysia Games (Sukma) Sarawak 2024 for as long as they are on duty during the games from Aug 17 to 24.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) report today, Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu gave this explanation to counter rumours that volunteers will not be paid allowances.

He elaborated that these ‘tokens’ will be given to volunteers to recognise their contributions behind the scenes to make this Sukma a success.

“It is indeed in the form of a ‘token’ but not an allowance because these are volunteers, so how do we want to pay them an allowance?

“So we will give them a ‘token’ and it is the same as the spirit of our struggle and the spirit of the management,” he said when met by reporters after the Youth Gathering at the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Complex here yesterday.

Rentap, the Chef De Mission of the Sarawak Contingent, added that cooperation between all parties to make the biggest sports event in Malaysia a success is important.

“This is not only from the volunteers but also from the government officials who work hard behind the scenes.”

He added the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department would handle the tokens to be given in the form of money.

In addition, Gerald said more than 4,000 volunteers, including government officials, will be on duty for Sukma 2024.

Also present was Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia Adam Adli Abdul Halim. — DayakDaily
