KUCHING, Oct 16: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is targeting a consortium structure with 51 per cent local equity and up to 49 per cent international participation to develop a major electricity transmission project linking Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
In a TVS news, TNB Chief Grid Officer Hasmarizal Hassan said the company is now in the final stages of forming the consortium.
“The pre-feasibility study for the 700-kilometre project connecting Sampadi near Kuching, Sarawak, to Sedenak in Johor was completed earlier this year.
“This paves the way for a consortium involving both local and international partners,” he said in his keynote address titled “From Interconnection to Integration: Building ASEAN’s Renewable-Ready Grid” at the ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2025 (AEBF-25) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday (Oct 15).
The project is designed to enable large-scale transmission of renewable hydroelectric energy from East Malaysia to West Malaysia.
Hasmarizal said it is planned as a multi-phase development, connecting the power grids of both regions via a subsea cable.
He noted that confidentiality agreements with shortlisted companies are currently underway. The final consortium members are expected to be confirmed by the end of this year, allowing the full feasibility study to commence in January 2026.
“Sarawak’s power transmission will be a key driver of Malaysia’s energy transition, enabling up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to be transmitted to Peninsular Malaysia under the ASEAN Power Grid Framework,” he said. — DayakDaily
