KUCHING, Aug 31: Several samples out of 14 positive cases detected in the Bandar Jaya housing area consist of a new Covid-19 variant.

Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing revealed that the data was disclosed by the Bintulu Divisional Health Office after analysing the sample tests conducted since the start of the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in the area last Sunday (Aug 29).

However, he did not specify which new variant of Covid-19 this was; previously, the Delta variant has been detected in Bintulu, while the Beta and Delta variants remain the dominant variants of the coronavirus in Malaysia.

“This new variant has a stronger and more dangerous infection rate than the previous variants.

“Therefore, I urge parents to stay at home and don’t bring their children to the shopping malls or supermarkets,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Tiong also said certified Covid-19 self-test kits are now available in the markets and pharmacies whereby the general public can conduct the test themselves.

“If they tested positive for the virus, they should immediately contact the Ministry of Health (MOH) or the nearest health facility for a detailed PCR test.

“However, I have taken note of the people’s grouses that there are individuals who refuse to call the authorities and choose to hide.

“Some even continue to operate their businesses despite knowing that they have tested positive through self-testing. This sort of attitude is really irresponsible,” he pointed out.

He further reminded the general public that those irresponsible actions would lead to more infections and bring danger to not only their beloved ones, but also themselves if they do not seek treatment immediately. ā€” DayakDaily
