KUCHING, Dec 6: Kota Sentosa deserves a leader who will represent the people, speak for them in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) and can make a difference, says Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak-Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (GPS-SUPP) candidate for Kota Sentosa said the constituency has a lot of potential that has yet to be discovered and developed.

“Kota Sentosa deserves a representative who will actually represent them, bring the required development for them, speak up for them, and make a difference.

“So Kota Sentosa will be a place where everybody can do business, a place good for them to live in, for the people to raise their children, and a place where everybody wants to be in,” he told reporters after the nomination process at Kota Sentosa public library here today.

When asked for comments about his chances of winning in the coming polls, Yap gave the question a pass, saying that the decision lies entirely in the hands of the people.

However, he was hopeful that the voters would make the right decision and elect a capable leader who stays true to his words.

“What’s important is that the voters will see the track record of the candidate to see whether he is a person who means what he says, or a situation of creating grandeur; lots of promises which they themselves know they cannot fulfill.

“So I hope the voters this time around will make an informed decision based on reality, the track record (of candidates) and based on the needs of the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yap’s opponent Michael Kong from Democratic Action Party (DAP) did not comment on his chances of winning, but was more concerned about the turnout rate on polling day.

“The only thing I’m afraid of this time is that because of Covid-19, people might not want to come out and vote.

“So, we really encourage the citizens and voters to come and show their support (on polling day),” he said.

Kota Sentosa will see a five-cornered fight between Yap, Kong, Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party’s (Aspirasi) Tan Kok Chiang, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) Lue Cheng Hian, and Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Datuk Dr Lau Pang Heng.

The incumbent for this constituency is Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng. He retained the seat for the third time in the 11th Sarawak Election against Yap with a majority of 2,819 votes. — DayakDaily
