KUCHING, May 29: There will be tight security measures implemented at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak festive season.
Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian said during festive seasons, public transport becomes a lifeline for many returning to their hometowns, especially in Sarawak’s rural areas.
Following this, he said, authorities have already prepared measures at the bus terminal in preparation for the upcoming Gawai Dayak.
“The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) will conduct checks on drivers while the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will inspect vehicles.
“Additionally, there is a requirement for two drivers to take turns on long-distance journeys—more than 300km or 4 hours. This ensures that bus drivers are not overly fatigued,” he said in a statement after visiting Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal here today.
He also said JPJ will conduct spontaneous and random spot checks to enforce compliance with traffic regulations by sending undercover officers on public transport.
Such initiatives, he believed, would ensure the safe operation of all 355 bus operators in Sarawak and safeguard the safety of all passengers.
At the same time, Kong requested the management of Kuching Sentral to address the issue of dysfunctional air-conditioners for the comfort of the passengers.
“Additionally, I have informed them that should any bus operators require additional licences to operate more buses during this festive season, LPKP Sarawak will expedite all applications to meet the increased demand,” he added.
Also present were Sarawak LPKP deputy director Razami Mohamad Jamali and Sarawak JPJ’s Road Safety and Corporate Unit representative Othman Mohamad. — DayakDaily
