KUCHING, Dec 18: Sarawak has the potential to become a key data hub for artificial intelligence (AI) processing with the establishment of a Tier-IV Data Centre in Santubong.
In a news report by TVS, Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching stated that the centre, built by Irix Corporation in 2022, operates as a high-performance data facility.
“Sarawak possesses this potential by offering data centre services with zero tolerance for downtime,” she told the Dewan Negara today
Teo explained that currently, there are two international subsea cable systems connecting Sarawak to other countries.
These include the Batam Sarawak Internet Cable System (BaSICS), which has a capacity of up to 48Tbps and was completed in 2022, and the South-East Asia Hainan-Hong Kong Express Cable System (SEA-H2X) with a capacity of 160Tbps, which is under construction and expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025.
She was responding to a question from Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew regarding the number of subsea internet cables linking Sarawak to other countries and the government’s plans to expand this network.
Additionally, Teo highlighted that Sarawak is connected to two existing domestic subsea cable systems: the Malaysian People’s Cable System (SKRM) by Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), linking Mersing, Kuching, Bintulu, and Miri, with a current capacity of 9.5Tbps, and the East-West cable system connecting Mersing and Kuching, implemented by Sacofa Sdn Bhd, with a current capacity of 600Gbps.
“These subsea cable routes form part of the core network connecting Sarawak to the global market, including regions such as Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia.
“The existing network capacity is currently adequate to meet future demand,” she added. —DayakDaily
