KUCHING, July 12: Three rabies-positive cases have been reported in Sarawak between July 7 and 11, involving two stray dogs and one pet dog.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng disclosed that one of the cases involving a stray dog was detected in Moyan Square, while a bite incident involving a rabies-positive pet dog was reported at Lorong 3, Taman Sri Moyan in Batu Kawah.
The third case, also involving a stray dog, was recorded along Jalan Kidurong in Medan Bintulu.
“All pet owners in Sarawak must vaccinate their dogs against rabies annually, in accordance with the Anti-Rabies Vaccination Order,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live session today.
He stressed that failure to comply is an offence under Section 40 of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance, 1999, and carries a fine of up to RM2,500.
“Dogs found without proof of vaccination may also be detained,” he warned.
Wee urged the public to remain alert as rabies continues to pose a serious threat in the community.
“Don’t let your guard down. MBKS has provided ample opportunities for pet owners to get their pets vaccinated, including our most recent anti-rabies drive held just last week at Song Swee Guan Recreation Park in Tabuan Jaya,” he said.
Two more vaccination campaigns are scheduled this year on Sept 20 at the MBKS Community Hall in conjunction with World Rabies Day, and on Oct 4 at the Sarawak Basketball Association in Taman Seng Goon.
“This is a chance for pet owners to show responsibility and care, not only for their pets but also for their families and the community,” Wee added. — DayakDaily
