KUCHING, March 21: Three new rabies cases have been detected in Kuching between March 17 and 21, prompting authorities to urge pet owners to vaccinate their animals to prevent further spread of the deadly virus.

According to the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), the latest cases involved a free-roaming pet dog in Kampung Sejijak, Batu Kawa, and two stray dogs—one from Taman Hillside, Matang Sungai Tengah, and another from MJC Pembinaan Quantiti Factory, Padawan.

All three cases involved bite incidents.

To strengthen rabies prevention efforts, DVSS is organising a free mass anti-rabies vaccination drive for pet owners.

“Join us for a free anti-rabies vaccination, dog licensing, and microchipping event. Plus, get subsidized neutering for your dogs!” the department announced in a Facebook post today.

The program will take place at Dewan Masyarakat, Jalan Padungan, on April 12, 2025 (Saturday), from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Authorities emphasise that rabies is 100 per cent preventable through vaccination and responsible pet ownership.

The public is encouraged to participate in the initiative to safeguard their pets and the community. — DayakDaily
