KUCHING, March 30: Three men have been arrested following a police chase at Jalan Green here on March 29.

According to acting Kuching district police chief Supt Merbin Lisa, during a routine crime prevention operation, officers tried to stop two suspicious vehicles—a red Mitsubishi Triton four-wheel drive (4WD) and a red Perodua Bezza —at about 3.20am.

Both vehicles fled, prompting the police to give chase to the 4WD, leading to a nearby residential area.

“The driver of the 4WD attempted to make a U-turn and charged towards three officers. One of the officers fired a shot towards the 4WD, causing it to crash,” he said in a statement.

Police managed to arrest the three men, who are locals aged 39, 41, and 43. Two of them had prior drug-related criminal records.

During the incident, the 41-year-old suspect sustained injuries and is reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment at the hospital.

In addition, a urine test was conducted on all three suspects who tested positive for drugs. Police also seized the vehicle and several tools, which were believed to be used for criminal purposes.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine; along with Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries a jail sentence of up to two years and whipping if convicted.

Following that, police are now on the lookout for the red Perodua Bezza.
