MIRI, Feb 12: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized three local fishing boats for fishing too close to the shore in Sibuti waters on Sunday morning.

In a statement, MMEA district 13 director, Captain Md Fauzi Othman said, 13 Indonesian crew members including skippers of the three fishing boats aged between 21 to 46-years-old, were detained.

“Our patrol vessel detected the trawlers for suspicious activity around 6am (Feb 10). Two of the trawlers were found five nautical miles from the beach while the third was located at about 1.6 nautical miles off Kuala Sibuti,” he said.

The boats were seized for fishing less than six nautical miles from the beach, breaking regulations under the Fisheries Act 1985. — DayakDaily
