KUCHING, Sept 12: Malaysia Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM) and Santubong MP, Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, has highlighted the unique spirit of unity and tolerance in Sarawak, calling it a model for the rest of the country.
In a TikTok video posted by Lumi News Malaysia in conjunction with upcoming Malaysia Day, Nancy reflected on her upbringing and experiences, emphasising the harmonious relationships between people of different races and religions in her home state.
“I never heard my mother say, ‘Make sure you don’t eat next to a non-Muslim.’ Never!” she shared, illustrating how inclusivity is deeply ingrained in the Sarawakian’s way of life.
Nancy pointed out that Sarawak and Sabah are often held up as exemplars of the ‘1Malaysia’ spirit, where diverse communities naturally come together.
“During our functions, regardless of whether you are Malay, Chinese, Indian, or of any other race, everyone sits together.
“It’s different in other parts of the country, but in Sarawak, this unity has been practised for generations,” she explained.
Sharing personal anecdotes, Nancy recalled how her mother’s Christian friend was always welcomed for prayer in their home, reflecting the deep-rooted respect and tolerance in their community.
“My grandmother wasn’t a Muslim, and yet we always ensured everyone was respected. This is how we should be – accommodating and inclusive,” she added.
Nancy stressed that the high level of tolerance in Sarawak’s multiracial families prevents unnecessary conflicts over race and religion, urging that this culture of harmony should be preserved and celebrated across the country.
“We don’t want to hurt anyone, especially over sensitive topics like religion or race. This is the Sarawakian way,” she concluded. — DayakDaily
