Technician sentenced to 20 years’ jail, 4 rotan strokes for raping girlfriend’s underaged sister

KUCHING, April 19: The Sessions Court here sentenced a technician to a total of 20 years’ jail and four strokes of the cane for raping the underaged sister of his girlfriend.

Lai Choon Chiew, 34, pleaded guilty to the two charges framed under Section 376(2)(d) of the Penal Code.


Sessions Court Judge Maris Agan accepted his plea and sentenced him to imprisonment of 10 years and two strokes of the cane for each charge.

The judge also ordered the imprisonment terms to run concurrently. Therefore, the accused only needs to serve 10 years in jail and receive four strokes of the cane.

Lai was charged with raping his girlfriend’s younger sister, who was 12-years-old at the time, at a house in Kampung Sri’ieng, Bau, between November 2020 and December 2020 and on April 6, 2021.

According to the brief facts of the case, the victim’s older sister is a single mother. The accused and his girlfriend are not married but were staying together in the victim’s house.

Between November and December 2020, the victim’s sister had to accompany her son who was being treated for rabies at a hospital.

The accused then started to rape the victim without her consent between November 2020 and December 2020.

On April 6, 2021, at about 4.30am, the victim’s sister saw the accused having sexual intercourse with the victim and lodged a police report against the accused.

The victim was pregnant but forced to abort the child as she was still young.
