Teacher accused of sexual assault in Bintulu remanded for five days

SIBU, Jan 13: A teacher accused of sexually assaulting students from a secondary school in Bintulu was remanded for five days by the court in Bintulu yesterday.

The teacher from Kelantan is said to have committed the offences last year. Following that, he fled the State but was arrested by police in Thailand.


In a statement today, Bintulu OCPD Supt Batholomew Umpit said the suspect will be produced in court again on Jan 16 and will be charged under Section 376 of the Penal Code (statutory rape) and Section 14(a) and 15(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (AKSTK).

Section 376 of the Penal Code carries a jail sentence of not less than five years and not more than 20 years.

Section 14(a) AKSTK, he said, provides for a jail term of not more than 20 years and shall be liable to whipping, while Section 15(a) carries an imprisonment of not more than 10 years or a fine of RM20,000 or both. — DayakDaily
