SIBU, June 25: Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang wants a penghulu be appointed to serve the residents in three densely populated Iban areas in his constituency.
These areas are Pasai Siong, Sentosa, and Sibu Jaya whose populations are increasing.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Iban residents in these three areas were excluded from receiving food aid baskets.
“This exclusion was due to the absence of an Iban Penghulu (community leader) in those areas who could help coordinate the list of residents eligible for food aid baskets,” he told reporters after attending the Ngiling Tikai ceremony held at Rh Lawrence Radin at Jalan Kemuyag, Pasai Bon yesterday.
He pointed out community leaders including penghulu, act as a bridge between the government and the people, and play a crucial role in assisting the government in various matters, including emergency and disaster relief distribution.
“I have discussed this matter with the Sibu Resident, and the Sibu District Office has also proposed the establishment of community chiefs in these three areas to the Sarawak government,” he said.
During the ceremony, Gira presented grants worth over RM200,000 to seven associations and clubs.
He also approved RM20,000 in funding for Rh Lawrence Radin’s Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and the Women’s Bureau. — DayakDaily
