KUCHING, March 20: The upgrading works at Taman Borneo here includes the construction of a 26-metre-long crossover box culvert, a 65-metre-long open drain and 103-metre-long concrete footpath.

Disclosing this, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said he was previously approached by residents staying at Taman Borneo, Lorong 4, Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Kuching who informed him that sections of the monsoon drain and footpath were not in good condition.

Both the concrete drain and footpath were cracking and required repairs.

Subsequently, Yap had submitted an application under the Sarawak government’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) for funding to repair the concrete drains and footpath at Taman Borneo. It was approved by the Sarawak government for implementation by Kuching City South Council (MBKS).

“The approved project is for the sum of RM234,852.70 and the scope includes construction of a 26-metre crossover box culvert; construction of a 65-metre open drain; and a 103-metre concrete footpath,” said Yap in a statement today.

This morning, MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng handed over the project site to the contractor, Sultanate Builders Company, witnessed Yap and others.

Yap said the upgrading of the drains are scheduled for four months and should be completed by July 19, 2023.

As a long-term solution, Yap appealed to both the federal unity government and Sarawak government to work together through the relevant authorities to formulate a comprehensive drainage system for the whole of N12 Kota Sentosa.

“This is because drainage and irrigation are enumerated as a specific item in the Concurrent List under the Federal Constitution which means that both the federal and Sarawak governments are jointly responsible,” said Yap.

On his part, Yap said he will continue to pursue more Sarawak government development funds to resolve the numerous flash flood problems in N12 Kota Sentosa and hoped that the current Member of Parliament for Stampin Chong Chieng Jen will also do his part to fight for federal government funding to resolve the drainage problems at severe flood-prone areas of Taman Happy Valley, Jalan Durian Burung and Borneo Garden, to name a few, under the midterm review of the 12th Malaysia Plan in Parliament this year.

Yap said anyone requiring assistance may call his Service Centre at 082-265513 or 011-31893319, or go in person to his Service Centre at E-2-25, 2nd Floor, Gala Street Mall, Gala City, Jalan Tun Jugah, Kempas Heights, Kuching to request for assistance. — DayakDaily
