KUCHING, April 9: The retaining wall project at Taman Belle Hill in Bintulu is expected to be completed by the end of this month to prevent further landslides in the area, Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing says.
In response to public complaints and concerns following the occurrence of another landslide in the area, Tiong said he has instructed Special Affairs Officer Steven Kong, together with Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) general manager Datu Muhamad Yakup Kari, and representatives from the developer of a nearby residential project, to assess the site and expedite the wall’s construction works.
“The most recent landslide occurred in a section where the retaining wall has yet to be completed. The general manager of BDA has already instructed the relevant parties to expedite the remaining work as quickly as possible to prevent the issue from worsening and posing further risks to the safety of nearby residents,” Tiong said in a Facebook post.
He noted that approximately 40 metres of the retaining wall are still under construction. However, he pointed out that the completed sections have proven effective, with no further incidents of soil erosion or landslides reported in those areas.
“Upon the completion of the retaining wall, the relevant authorities will begin earthworks in phases, with the overall restoration works expected to conclude by the end of May.
“To ensure safety and quality, a 12-month monitoring period will follow the repair work, during which greenery will be planted to help stabilise the soil and provide additional safety assurance,” he added.
Tiong also shared that the developer of the new residential project has pledged to assist in repairing damaged homes once the construction is complete.
“We will continue to closely monitor the situation, ensuring that each party fulfils its responsibilities so that landslide incidents do not recur,” he said.
